After dealing with chronic gut health issues, I decided to adopt a grain free and dairy free diet. There are very few dishes I miss but sometimes I just want a warm bowl of comforting oatmeal. I did a little research and found that hemp hearts are a great grain free alternative to oats. I now prefer hemp heart “oatmeal” versus traditional oatmeal. Not only are hemp hearts completely grain free they are also more nutritionally dense than oats. Hemp hearts are loaded with healthy fats, fiber and plant based protein as well as very low carb. This hemp heart “oatmeal” can be keto and paleo compliant depending on the toppings used!
-1/2 cup Hemp Hearts
-1 cup Almond Milk (any milk or plant based milk will work)
-2 TBSP ground Flax Seed
-a pinch Cinnamon * Optional
-a pinch of cardamom * Optional
-a splash of Vanilla extract * Optional
This recipe is super easy, just combine the hemp hearts, almond milk (homemade almond milk recipe here) and ground flax seed in a small saucepan on medium heat. Stir the mixture until it begins to lightly bubble and boil. Once the mixture has thickened to an “Oatmeal” like consistency turn off the heat and serve in a bowl. Then add your favorite toppings like, berries, bananas, nuts, seeds, or sweeteners like maple syrup. I like to add my homemade almond butter (recipe here) and top with a few berries to my hemp heart “oatmeal”.
**Note on recipe – I find hemp heart “oatmeal” to be extremely filling so typically this amount makes two servings for me and it easily can be stored in the fridge to eat the next day as well!
